Matinee Musicale hires executive director

July 6, 2023

Matinee Musicale is proud to announce the hiring of Mark Niedermier as its first-ever executive director. Run exclusively by volunteers since its inception 123 years ago, Matinee Musicale’s decision to create and fund this role is a reflection of its continued passion to bring world-class chamber music to Duluth.

Niedermier sees Duluth as “a thriving community for the arts with a lot of energy around chamber music right now.” He looks forward to working with Matinee Musicale’s board and volunteers to develop an expanded vision of what it can offer and “help increase awareness of this part of Duluth’s identity and help make our city a destination for classical music fans.”

After teaching in Maryland and New York, Niedermier headed schools in St. Paul, Anchorage, Denver and, most recently, Many Rivers Montessori in Duluth. He brings expertise in marketing, advancement, special events and strategic planning to Matinee Musicale. Niedermier’s BA in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis included studies in music history and theory, and he also attended the Guitar Study Center in New York City.

Making it a priority to attend opera, chamber music and symphony performances wherever he has lived, Niedermier looks forward to making the transition from education administration to arts administration. “With my background in elementary and middle school education, I’m especially eager to find ways to increase the number of students able to experience the exciting and intimate nature of a chamber music performance.”
